Description:
This six-session beekeeping course will build your confidence to make you a successful beekeeper.

With more than 12 years of beekeeping experience, advanced beekeeper Mike Rusnak will lead you through the beekeeping process.

The sessions will include these presentations:

Week 1: Familiarization: Introduction, History, Benefits of Beekeeping, Resources, Costs

Week 2: The Honeybee: Anatomy, Life Cycle, Castes, Jobs, Characteristics

Week 3: Equipment and Stock: Hive Components, Tools, Location, Suppliers, Races

Week 4: Management: Inspections, Pests, Parasites, Diseases, Feeding, Treatments

Week 5: Colony Dynamics: Honey Production, Year in the Apiary Outlined, Winter Clustering and Overwintering Honey Requirements, Temperature Regulation

Week 6: Review, Examination, Course Feedback

An optional off-site field day will be planned to correspond with installation of honeybees in a Langstroth hive, weather permitting.

This workshop is presented in time for you to order your own supplies to get started with beekeeping this spring. For a preview of the workshop, read The Backyard Beekeeper by Kim Flottum. Books may be purchased at Plum Creek Nature Center.
Event Requirements:
Registration is required by calling 708.946.2216 by Friday, February 10.

This program will take place indoors in an accessible facility. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should mention their request when registering, or submit a request online no later than 48 hours before the program.
