Chicago artist Catherine Game’s “Backyard Birds” collection will be on display at Isle a la Cache Museum Wednesday, July 5-Friday, August 4.

Using India ink and homemade paints from sustainably sourced materials such as vegetables, spices and soils, Game has created artwork that depicts the birds of Chicago, which she describes on her website, www.CatherineGame.com, as “active and important city neighbors,” even though they are “often overlooked.”

Subjects range from a red-tailed hawk and a northern cardinal to a black-capped chickadee and a common goldeneye. However, her art tells a story beyond the images themselves. In her North Pond series, yellow circles in the background of each painting represent the highest number of that bird species documented at Chicago's North Pond on a given day by citizen scientists using ebird.org. This website, launched by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, provides bird abundance data. In her Rogers Park series, line patterns in the background of each painting correspond to each bird species’ song.

Game notes on her website the difference, for example, between the sharp lines of the ring-billed gull's call and the soft curves of the mourning dove's song.
