Trail Location and Access

The DuPage River Trail is a work in progress through a partnership between the Forest Preserve District and 12 other agencies. The trail is planned to travel 34 miles from Channahon north to DuPage County.

The Forest Preserve District has developed three segments of the trail, totaling 6.81 miles in Will County.

The southern segment may be accessed from the following locations:

• Hammel Woods - Crumby Recreation Area (Black Road, Shorewood)
• Hammel Woods - DuPage River Access (Black Road, Shorewood)
• Hammel Woods - Route 59 Access (Route 59, Shorewood)

A northern segment may be accessed from Whalon Lake (Royce Road, Naperville).

Another northern segment may be accessed from Riverview Farmstead Preserve (Book Road, Naperville).

Trail Experience and Activities

The segment of the DuPage River Trail at Hammel Woods is a hilly, paved linear trail and travels 3.7 miles through forest. Download a map of the trail at Hammel Woods.

The segment of the trail at Whalon Lake is a flat, paved loop and linear trail and travels 2.36 miles through wetland and around Whalon Lake. Download a map of the trail at Whalon Lake.

The segment of the trail at Riverview Farmstead Preserve is a flat, paved linear trail and travels 0.75 mile through open areas and a historic farmstead.

All segments of the trail are ideal for the following activities:

• Biking
• Hiking/Running
• In-Line Skating
• Cross-Country Skiing
• Snowshoeing

Trail Connections

DuPage River Trail: Trail connections in Naperville connect the segment of the DuPage River Trail at Whalon Lake to segments of the trail owned by the City of Naperville and the Naperville Park District.

Rock Run Greenway Trail: Street routes in Shorewood and Joliet connect the segment of the DuPage River Trail at Hammel Woods to the 9.93-mile, linear paved Rock Run Greenway Trail.
