Most people don’t think warm, fuzzy thoughts when they think of bats. Instead, we tend to view these mammals a little skeptically — as disease-carrying nuisances.

But the world as we know it would be very different without bats, because they are important pollinators of food and plants in many parts of the world. Many bat species across the world are threatened or endangered, including 13 in the United States.
