Preserve history
The 77-acre Veterans Woods was acquired in 1966.
The preserve is part of the Des Plaines River preservation system, which conserves more than 2,400 acres.
Veterans Woods has two access areas, Roy F. Hassert Grove and Traders Corners. Both are located on Joliet Road, east of Route 53/Bolingbrook Drive in Romeoville.

Veterans Woods protects forest habitat.
The preserve is home to a variety of plant species, including the yellow trout lily and oaks.

Trails
Veterans Woods features a 0.33-mile paved trail, ideal for the following activities:
- Biking
- Hiking/running
- Cross-country skiing
- Snowshoeing
Picnicking
There are two picnic shelters available for rental:
- Roy F. Hassert Grove Shelter, which has a permit capacity of 100 people.
- Traders Corner, which has a permit capacity of 100 people.
Geocaching
Permits are available for geocaching at Veterans Woods.
