Backpacking 101 Part 3: Overnight

This overnight program will run from 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, to 3 p.m. Sept. 15.

In the final part of our backpacking series, it’s time to put your newfound backpacking knowledge to the test. This backpacking trip will begin at Lake Chaminwood Preserve, where we will hike 7.5 miles on the I&M Canal State Trail to McKinley Woods — Frederick’s Grove to camp overnight and then head back the next morning. This challenging program will be held in a safe and supportive atmosphere for beginners.

This is the final program in our Backpacking 101 series. Participation in previous sessions is not required to attend but is strongly encouraged. Other programs are as follows:

Participants must be able to hike 8 miles while carrying 30 pounds to 40 pounds.

Registration includes dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Please pack plenty of snacks for the trail. Group gear will be supplied, while participants are responsible for bringing their own backpacks and sleeping gear. A packing list and menu will be provided before the program. Group participation will be required for meal preparation and cleanup.

This program takes place entirely outdoors on natural terrain and at a campsite with an outhouse and hand-pump water access. No bathhouse or indoor restrooms will be available. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should mention their request when registering or submit a request online no later than 48 hours before the program.
